On systems that can address up to 32 bits of memory, pointers have to be large enough to store any address – up to 32 bits – and this makes them each cost 4 bytes. Generally, this means that 32-bit systems have 4-byte pointers whereas 64-bit systems have 8-byte pointers.

My wife had a work function this evening, so I went with two of my closest friends to Rengaya, near the station in North Sydney. My first impression when walking through the door was that it was up market but with friendly waiting staff, giving the usual Japanese greating when you come through the door. The furniture and Japanese bbq was very clean and stylish as one would expect from a place like Rengaya. They even had a decorative suit of armour on display as you come in the front door.

We ordered quite a lot of beef, and oh how delicious it was.

luciferous's picture Buy me lunch and in return I promise a lively, engaging discourse throughout. 'Have you no shame?' demanded the woman by the pool.
'Yes, ma'am,' I replied. 'And, no money.'
'I am referring to your naked frame.'
I examined myself treading the water. Indeed, I was naked.
'Haven't you heard?' I casually asked. 'It's called skinny dipping.'
She looked arrogant at first...
'Care to join me?'
...And then incredulous.

Unsolicited messages on Facebook lately. From strangers. Facebook tells me, “You have no mutual friends.” To that I breathe a sigh of relief.

And, then the random adds. Who are these people? Where have I been advertised? Not all unwanted, mind you. Some interesting, some head-turners, and the rest meh. But, all in all, too many. So I've replied one, or two. And on one early occasion, I decided to ask questions, a kind of initiation puzzle.

She sends an add request.

There's probably no God

I don't know how homogeneous the atheist collective is, but among the religious it seems as if only the dolts band together against something. The ‘no God’ campaign reveals that there may be such sheep-like idiocy even among atheists.

Ok: there is no current evidence that there is a God.

Drupal and msmtp

I've been working on a Drupal module to allow me to send mail with msmtp. I call it Mailer, which is a terribly creative name, I know. I'm so clever!

Mailer can be extended to work with any SMTP client, but for now has an interface for msmtp. I use msmtp for transmitting mail to the Google SMTP server.

Mailer works by opening a process with popen, and the writing the email into this handle.

During one interview I was asked to write an algorithm to reverse a singly-linked list. This is a data structure that can only be traversed in one direction, kind of like driving down a one-way street.

It is important to know how a linked list differs from an array. An array can also be used as a list, so when are linked lists more appropriate?

Saigon bleeds traffic

Saigon bleeds traffic. And, I am reminded of how blood flows through the body. Ear to the ground in the city centre. Can one hear the heart as it beats?

Saigon traffic

Yesterday, walking through the park, everyone keeps off the grass. I stole some footsteps across the green as school children watched sitting on a bench.

Kay is still in Ben Thanh market. She is the only person I know here, but I forgot her name.

Arguments

So this is what it says on the top of the Miloping front page:

Friends agreed with friends, in order to express friendliness. Enemies disagreed with enemies…

Now maybe it's just me, but disagreeing with friends is not a bad thing. Having an argument sounds really bad, but is actually a really constructive thing to do, as long as you do it properly.

Did the meteor burn up in the atmosphere? They say that 5% of meteors are made of iron, and, when so, denser, able to penetrate the atmosphere in pieces. Literally, money falling from the sky.

Harbor

We didn't build up this city; it fell down. Not in scattered pieces of rock, but gleaming bullets that smashed into the earth where they neatly sit today. We built roads around them, and still wonder where they came from.
