My wife had a work function this evening, so I went with two of my closest friends to Rengaya, near the station in North Sydney. My first impression when walking through the door was that it was up market but with friendly waiting staff, giving the usual Japanese greating when you come through the door. The furniture and Japanese bbq was very clean and stylish as one would expect from a place like Rengaya. They even had a decorative suit of armour on display as you come in the front door.
We ordered quite a lot of beef, and oh how delicious it was. We used the supplied bbq to cook it and I made sure it was at least a little rare in the middle. Rengaya serves a type of Wagyu beef that is a cross between the Japanese black cow and the Australian Angus. They have more details on their own website: http://www.yakiniku.com.au/rengaya.html We also ate the ox tongue, thin pork and bbq vegetables. For a drink we had the 3 sake sampler which was most satisfying.
We had a great time and I recommend this restaurant and I plan to visit again. The only issue it was not a cheap night. The only problem was we had to be out by 7:30 so we had to stop eating before we were completely full.
