I have left something familiar and now I don't know how to get it back. Lately, it has become a fantasy to simply remember. I spend my days dabbling in things to arouse nostalgia: video games I played from when I was young.

I would find them in gaming magazines, would read reviews and hunt for them in malls. Video game stores in Singapore, as I recall resemble the settings of the types of games I played. Inside large buildings, blacked out windows and dark corners hiding empty shops, the open few identifiable by the pale glow of fluorescent tubing from inside.

I am getting married. It does not come as a shock to anyone who knows me as it has been quite a while coming. However, not content to send out normal invitations I have decided to make a wedding website to host invitations, send out e-mail notifications and track RSVPs.

I would like to share the journey of its development, until it is ready.

“I want everybody dancing,” she swung her hand in our direction and turned to us. “This is a dancing song.” My Precious played at the Sandringham Hotel tonight and I managed to catch them in a pretty good set.

The upstairs loft was empty when I arrived, with only the merchandise crew and various wallflowers awkwardly loitering and chatting. I loitered over to one of the guys behind the desks and wondered if he was part of the band. When he looked up I opened with, “What time's the show?”

“About 8”, he said.

I scanned the merchandise and saw that they had a promotional poster for their album titled, The Fine Line.

“Are you Singaporean?”

“No”, I replied. Was he wondering why anybody would come to the show if they were not Singaporean or do I just look like I could be from Singapore? “I used to live there,” I added, hoping he could fix me up with some Singaporean muso goss or something like that.

Just as a bit of an introduction, this article refers to the wedding website I am making to manage the guests that are coming to my wedding. So far, the website has guests, it has locations (places where events for the wedding will occur) and it has pages to manage these entities. Also, by the power of Django, guests can already login and see a blank page. You may be wondering why anyone would want to login to view a blank page, and my answer is they wouldn't want to. So today I started researching how best to display the invitations. For the invitations I have a few requirements, they should have an image background, then there is a certain amount of static text in a certain font, and the name of the guest in a separate font. The names have to be added later and preferably by a script as I do not want to sit around for several hours and insert names into the invitations, file by file.

Poor man's chatroom

It is always amazing to see how quickly something can be made by a group of people who have the same understanding of what is required and how it should be built. Today under the threat of our Jabber server's decommissioning, which entailed the shutting down of our beloved “DevChat” an IRC-style chat room for developers only, a vigilante group of us hacked together a chat client and “server” using only the unix utilities echo and tail.
