It's like traveling to the future. (Except right at the start when I thought the plane may have landed somewhere other than KL because I could not recognize the arrival hall. It turns out Air Asia comes in to a different older, dirtier terminal.)

But back to the future. Kuala Lumpur is very clean and colorful. Its architecture is amazing, especially around the KLCC area.

Not sure when it started happening, but Twitter on my browser is really slow. By slow, I mean the UI responds slowly. Specifically, when I type in the tweet textarea, each letter takes about a second to appear. Even after I finish typing the letters take some time to catch up. At first I thought maybe all those hours on typing tutor really paid off. But, no: the browser was unresponsive and CPU activity soared. Something weird was happening in the Javascript.

odt2txt is a utility to extract text out of Open Office documents. The extracted text can be useful if you want to find out if the text in two documents differ.

I was a little worried coming into this restaurant, I had never been before, and on the many occasions walking past it it always looked a little daunting. There were, however, very few complains that I could offer for our experience at this restaurant, the food was excellent, the views were great and the wait staff polite and reasonably attentive.

We were seated right next to the window, looking out over the harbour with scenes of the harbour bridge and of the opera house itself.

We just got back from a really good lunch at this establishment. I could not believe how nice the location was, the attentiveness of the waiting staff and the quality of the food. The restaurant itself is in a small shopping mall in the rocks, on the corner of Argyle and Kendell lane. There is something very enticing about the restaurant, there is an open kitchen where you can see all the chefs at work, the art is appealing and minimalist, but still relevant to the location.

After watching Samurai Champloo I was kind of obsessed about Dango. I looked everywhere for Dango, but couldn't find it. I dreamed about eating Dango. When I saw some Mochi ice-cream at the asian grocer I thought it was Dango! Can you imagine my degree of distress? An attentive friend Ritee picked some up from the store for me when I stayed with her last year in Tokyo.

Google servers have become sentient and decided the internet is harmful to humans. That's the only reason I can think of to explain that every search result is coming up with a “malware warning”.

Even Google's website has a malware warning. Look.

These days the apartment block is a cluster of disconnected rooms whose occupants exist in isolation.

I heard that recursive copying using tar and stdin is faster than cp -R. The syntax to do so is a little awkward. Here is an example which is the equivalent of cp -R source destination:

~$ mkdir destination
~$ cd source
~/source$ tar cf - . | (cd ../destination; tar xf -)

I have created a convenient script (cpr) which uses the tar method but whose syntax is closer to the cp method. The same example as above with the script:

~$ cpr source destination

What if we want to copy just the files inside source and put them in the current director?

On systems that can address up to 32 bits of memory, pointers have to be large enough to store any address – up to 32 bits – and this makes them each cost 4 bytes. Generally, this means that 32-bit systems have 4-byte pointers whereas 64-bit systems have 8-byte pointers.
